At the Library – April 2024

Kim Rinaldi, Senior Branch Manager

Hello Friends! High season may be coming to an end, but there’s still plenty happening at the Key West Library. Join us on April 10 at 6 p.m. for a musical performance by Sofia Talvik, who has been described as a North Sea siren, blending sparkle and melancholy with a twang of Americana. Then on April 17 at 7 p.m, Florida Keys Historian, Dr. Corey Malcom, presents a lecture on the “Many Cemeteries of Key West.” Join us for this incredible presentation – you won’t believe where people are buried in this town! We are also very excited to welcome back NASA Ambassador, Kevin Gallagher, on April 24 at 6 p.m. Get here early to grab a good seat, as his celestial lectures are always well-attended. This month, he will present updates and images from the Webb Telescope and LIGO Lab.

As the weather warms up, join us in the cool library every Saturday, when our regular clubs meet. We have the Fiber Fiends, for our local knitters, meeting at 2:00 pm. For our board game enthusiasts, join our Magic the Gathering group, which meets at 10 a.m. Do you dream of being a chess grandmaster? Why not start your journey at the Key West Library? Chess Club meets at 1 p.m. and is suitable for all ages and all skill levels. There is something for everyone!

As always, we have crafts galore! In our weekly Adult Crafting Class, we will be making sea salt scrub, mini pinatas and a decoupage jar, just to name a few. This class meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. In addition, our monthly Ceramics Painting Class meets on April 25, at 10 a.m. Participants will be making adorable birdhouses just in time for spring.

Two creative writing workshops will be held on April 4 and 18 at 4 p.m. Join Carly Neilson for writing exercises, idea sharing, and group encouragement. April is National Poetry month, so the classes will focus on the art of writing poetry. And check out our poetry display near the front desk for inspiration!

In April, the library book club is reading The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. Stop in on April 10, at noon or 5 p.m. (yes, there are two sessions to suit everyone’s busy schedule!) when we discuss this historical adventure/mystery and then pick up your copy of May’s book club selection, Hello Beautiful, by Ann Napolitano.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again — you really need to signup for the library’s e-newsletter. This way, you will have all the events delivered right to your inbox every month. You’ll never miss a thing!

If you’re around this summer, be sure to visit us at the little pink library and say, “Hey!”
