Message from the President

The Friends Want You!

Do you have “a very particular set of skills?”

Dear Friends—

As you know, the Friends is a volunteer-run organization with no paid staff. We work hard to keep our overhead low so we can maximize our support for the library—and that means relying on the time, talent, and generosity of our members.

Right now, we’re looking to welcome additional volunteers to help with a variety of roles. If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved, this might be the perfect moment.

A few things to know as you consider volunteering:

  • These responsibilities are currently shared by several people, and we expect them to remain so. You’re welcome to express interest in one task—or several.
  • The volunteers currently handling these roles are happy to train and support you. Much of the work won’t ramp up until the current season winds down.
  • We generally use common, user-friendly tools.
  • Nearly all of these tasks can be done remotely.
  • We’re a fun bunch. (Truly.)
  • And yes—we’re more than happy to answer questions. (We expect you’ll have some!)

We’re currently seeking help in the following areas:

Board Secretary: Responsibilities include recording minutes for our six times a year board meetings and sheparding them through the approval process. The Secretary is a member of our board and of our executive committee.

Communications

  • Newsletter Editor: Assigning articles; editing, and formatting content.
  • Social Media: Taking photos at events and posting to Facebook and Instagram.
  • Website Editor: Updating information seasonally and maintaining content throughout the year.
  • Graphics: Creating posters, flyers, social media headers, and similar materials.
  • Print Materials Editor: Working with our (wonderful) in-kind design partner to edit and manage print pieces.

Membership

  • Database Manager: Maintaining our member management system by updating settings, generating reports, and entering members who pay by check.
  • Growth & Renewals: Planning and executing strategies to grow membership and managing renewal communications.

Fundraising
Our fundraising efforts extend beyond membership base and currently focus on business sponsorships. We’re open to new ideas and creative approaches in this area.

Book Sales—and More
We’re always happy to welcome volunteers to help with our book sales and other activities.

If any of these roles sound like a good fit, we would love to hear from you. Simply reply to this message, or email us at membersupport@folkw.org, or fill out this form.

With warmest wishes,
Barbara Ross
